Sport

Sport plays a central part in our extra-curricular programme.

As part of the David Ross Education Trust, we believe all pupils are entitled to a wide-range of high quality sporting experiences and here at The Abbey, we work hard to provide this for our pupils.

We believe that, as well as teaching our children the core physical skills necessary for a healthy, active lifestyle, we can improve our children’s teamwork, sportsmanship and resilience through sport.

Uniform

Children are expected to bring their PE kit in on their assigned days.

The kit consists of an Abbey t-shirt (which should be the child’s house colour), blue shorts and suitable footwear. In the winter, children are encouraged to bring in tracksuit bottoms and sweaters as we will be outside as much as possible.

Extra-Curricular Activities

We aim to offer a range of sporting experiences for our children.

This academic year our school has had the great fortune of experiencing a variety of activities.

We have had West Bromwich Albion come into school to work on Footballing skills. Some of our children were fortunate enough to be chosen to go and train with them.  During November we held a Diwali Dance Workshop for the children. The then created a performance which was shared with their class and Teachers. Daventry Rugby Club have created a strong link with the school. They have come in to tell the children about the club as well as the children having the opportunity to give Rugby a go.

We are part of a Daventry cluster of schools through the NSSP and with local DRET schools so we have a full schedule of competitive festivals throughout the academic year. Updates about sporting fixtures appear in our weekly newsletter and don’t forget to check out the school calendar on the website for forthcoming events. Our blog also keeps you updated of our results.

As part of its commitment to sport, the David Ross Education Trust hosts a Winter Cup every year. We compete against schools in the south of the network in Netball and Football. However, the highlight of our sporting calendar is the Summer Cup. This is a sporting extravaganza which all DRET academies are invited to attend. Last year, Colin Jackson, Roger Black, Beth Tweddle and Rebecca Adlington appeared, to encourage and motivate the children. Colin Jackson said, “It was an immense pleasure to meet so many talented students who have the same enthusiasm for sport that I did at their age.” Last year over 1500 students from all DRET academies attended, including the Abbey. It was an amazing day, one the children will remember for a long time.
